Those standardized exit bars are called ARM A DOR.

Has anyone modified their halligan forks to be able to pull cylinders? If so could you send pics? How well does it work? Does it compromise the integrity of the forks? I've seen modified adze ends...made wider, but have only heard about cutting forks to pull cylinders!

What kind of success does he have with his nozzle tool?
Larry Glover Comment by Larry Glover on November 6, 2009 at 10:35pm
I'm trying to get one of our guys to realize that the nozzle is not a forcible entry tool. He has used it 3 times in the last year as his entry tool.

Got this from the Brothers at Brotherhood Instructors LLC- Certain franchise chains like Radio Shack and Starbucks have taken to standardizing the exit hardware on their rear doors. Take note! The Panic hardware locks into both sides of the door buck (frame)

Tools are not door chocks!! Door chocks are door chocks!! Carry both and you will always have a tool (or two) when you need it (them) and a chock once you're in! It's hard to breach a wall or take a window from the inside with a chock!

Mark, You are right! I don't see how anyone can gain a full understanding of "every" aspect of this job without knowing building construction and fire behavior. Know the structures you are getting into and how they are built!!!! How is fire likely to travel in these buildings? Then you can make the building behave, make effective fireground decisions, get yourself out of trouble, and accomplish the tasks at hand.

Great idea Chuck. I have always been a fan of ensuring an area of refuge be it an apartment or office/room across and down the hall prior to making attack. Also knowing building constructionn and your district can be huge. One of my captains when I was fresh out of the academy and on EMS runs etc... would ask me when the patient was loaded on the ambulance. What if questions. How would you attack the fire? Where would you vent? HOW WOULD YOU GET OUT??? Be safe everyone!
