Pride and Ownership: A Firefighter's Love of the Job

Tell us…
...what ceremonies you’re conducting to get them fired up.
...what traditions you have in your fire department.
...about the history of your department and your department’s heritage.
...how you expect your new firefighters to treat the job.
...how you expect your company officers to treat their men and women.
...what chief officers can do to boost morale and create that atmosphere of ownership.
...what issues we’re facing in today’s fire service.

I am looking for a little direction. In Dennis Smith's "Report from Engine Company 82" he mentions the term 'first whip'. This got my brain going. I am looking for ways to help some of our guys get fired up a little and cool titles might be a little way to get em going. Anybody know any more of these cool monickers that come from the old days of wooden hydrants?

Chief, I have read your book twice now and had the priveledge to see you speak a couple years ago in Hanover Park IL and you actually taught my Instructor I class years ago in North Aurora with Chief Enright. Your book is excellent and I try to instill on myself and my guys daily the pride and tradition in this job. Now if I can get my Chief to have some pride in us we will be doing great. Thanks for the wisdome. This is the greatest job in the world.

How about "Leave the job a little bit better then when you started". "We are our brothers keeper"," There are two shifts in the fire service, (insert shift) and everyone who wants to be on (insert shift)".
